A life in the fast lane... Denis Manning is a world renowned land speed racer. He’s designed and built some of the world’s fastest motorcycles. Amongst all of this Denis has continued to expand his own company, BUB Enterprises, to become a manufacturer of high quality performance exhaust systems for cruisers, sport bikes and ATV’s.
Denis Manning has worked in the motorcycle industry for over 40 years. In his early years he worked in a motorcycle shop, employed by racer Dutch Mueller, who was also known as ‘The Flying Dutchman’. Denis was soon nicknamed BUB (‘Big Ugly Bastard’) and thus became the name behind the legend.
Early in his racing career, Denis was offered a spot on the USA Drag racing team in England. After England his racing career took a turn. Taking inspiration from his childhood idol, Mickey Thompson, Denis headed off to the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah.
In 1968 he built his first streamliner. In 1970, at the tender age of 24, Denis built the world record breaking Harley-Davidson streamliner that was ridden by the late Cal Rayborn at 265MPH. His racing career expanded from there, to building streamliners for Harley, Triumph, and Norton to name a few. In his career so far, Denis has designed and owned 6 of the 11 fastest motorcycles in history. His designs have included streamliners, conventional motorcycles, and on some occasions, LSR cars.
Among his acheivements, in 2006, fresh from regaining the world record, he was inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame. In 2009 he was the recipient of the EasyRider's Lifetime acheivement award.
For over 35 years Denis has been creating motorcycles to capture the ultimate title of "world’s fastest motorcycle". Having held the record twice, Denis and his crew are working towards regaining the title and striving to be the world's first 400mph motorcycle .
Denis began BUB Enterprises in 1976 with a desire to build superior motorcycle exhaust systems. He immediately realized the need for a performance exhaust system for the very popular Triumph motorcycles of the day. Having many years of experience with the Triumph and other European brands like Norton, Moto Guzzi and others, Denis exhaust systems soon gained the respect of the Triumph community as "the best pipe out there".
Denis was able to expand the business to include exhaust systems for the Harley Davidson line of motorcycles and the new Japanese touring bikes.
As the business steadily grew Denis moved the entire operation to a 3000 square foot building perched atop a hill overlooking the valley on his northern California ranch.
As the company continued to grow Denis designed and built a brand new 15,000 square foot state of the art manufacturing facility in the small Northern California town of Grass Valley. In 2002 Denis hooked up with the legendary Gerald Rinehart of NASCAR fame to manufacture a new exhaust system for the Harley Davidson touring bikes that would change the industry. The Rinehart True Duals would become the best selling aftermarket exhaust system for the Harley Davidson touring bikes of all time.
Today BUB Enterprises has over 40,000 square feet of dedicated manufacturing space in Grass Valley CA and another 40,000 square foot state of the art facility in Janesville Wisconsin.
The original 15,000 SQ FT building is now used as the main administration headquarters as well as our extensive research and development facilities. Also operating from this building is Denis race shop as well as the offices for the BUB Speed Trials. Our annual motorcycle speed trials event at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Denis had always dreamed of producing and promoting the sport of land speed racing. In 2004, along with his daughter-in-law, Delvene, he began the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials. Through this annual event he is able to provide the needs that are specific to motorcycle land speed racing.
The BUB Speed Trials offers motorcycles the opportunity to attempt official world and national record attempts. It is the first event to offer multiple motorcycles and riders the chance to break a world record, in that previous world record attempts have always been a single machine making the attempt. Along side the fastest motorcycles in the world, everyone can take a pass down the famed Bonneville salt flats with the 'Run Watcha Brung' portion of the meet. The BUB Speed Trials are sanctioned by both the Fédération Internationale De Motocyclisme (FIM) and the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA).
In 2007 BUB Racing was the recipient of the AMA's Track Racing Organizer of the Year.
